What the Ova Blanket is, how it works, and whether it does what it says.
Does the Ova Blanket actually work?
Yes — but with important precision. The Ova Blanket blocks RF radiation (radio-frequency — the type from Wi-Fi, phones, 5G and Bluetooth) by up to 99% in laboratory conditions. This is verified by an ISO/IEC 17025-accredited EMC laboratory and is reproducible across every production batch.
What it does not block is ELF magnetic fields — the type produced by electrical wiring and appliances. No silver-fibre textile can block ELF. We are explicit about this on our Science page and will not pretend otherwise.
The Ova Meter detects ELF fields and helps you identify and remove ELF sources — a more effective approach than trying to shield them.
Is there electronics or a battery inside the blanket?
No. The Ova Blanket contains zero electronics. No chip, no battery, no wireless component of any kind. The shielding comes entirely from the EcoShield™ silver-fibre weave — a passive fabric that requires no power to function.
This is a deliberate and principled design choice. A product that emits wireless signals to protect you from wireless signals would be a contradiction. The blanket simply exists, and it works.
Which size should I order?
Infant (60×80cm) — for newborns up to approximately 6 months. Note: one reviewer found this size runs slightly small for larger newborns — if your baby is on the larger end, consider the Child size.
Child (100×140cm) — the most versatile size. Suitable from 3 months to around 8 years, and our best-seller. Can be used as a cot blanket, pram blanket, or on a single bed.
Adult (140×200cm) — standard single or double bed coverage. Ideal for parents who also want protection, or for older children with larger beds.
If in doubt, size up — a larger blanket offers more coverage and flexibility.
Is it safe for newborns and babies?
Yes. The Ova Blanket is OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified — tested for over 100 harmful substances including heavy metals, pesticide residues and formaldehyde. The outer layer is 100% GOTS organic cotton. The silver-fibre inner layer is the same material used in medical textiles and wound dressings worldwide.
The standard safe sleep guidance applies: do not use blankets with infants under 12 months as a covering in the cot. The Ova Blanket can be used in a pram, as a mat, placed flat under a mattress or used on a child over 12 months as a normal blanket.
Does the blanket protect from 5G specifically?
Yes, for sub-6GHz 5G (the 3.5 GHz band used by most current UK 5G networks). EcoShield™ is tested up to 3 GHz and maintains 99%+ attenuation across this range.
Millimetre-wave 5G (mmWave, 24–100 GHz) is not yet widely deployed in UK residential areas. The blanket has not been tested at these frequencies. If mmWave becomes prevalent in your area, we will update our testing accordingly and communicate this publicly.
The science
What the evidence says, what it doesn't, and how to think about it.
Is EMF radiation actually harmful?
The honest answer is: the science is genuinely uncertain for long-term exposure at low levels. There is no scientific consensus that everyday EMF exposure at current levels causes demonstrable harm in healthy adults or children.
What we know: the IARC classified RF fields as Group 2B "possibly carcinogenic" in 2013 — the same category as coffee and pickled vegetables. This classification is based on limited evidence, not proof of harm. Multiple health authorities recommend precautionary limits for children specifically, because developing tissue absorbs proportionally more radiation.
Ova is precautionary protection, not a response to a proven crisis. We think reasonable precaution for children is intelligent — but we will never use fear to sell a product.
Are the WHO guidelines safe enough?
The ICNIRP/WHO limit of 2,000 μW/m² reflects the level at which thermal (heating) effects have been demonstrated in laboratory conditions. It includes a significant safety margin.
Many scientists and practitioners argue this limit was set primarily for short-term thermal effects, and does not adequately account for long-term low-level exposure, particularly in children. The Building Biology Institute recommends a much lower sleeping area threshold of 0.1 μW/m² as a precautionary standard.
The Ova app shows both thresholds so you can make your own informed decision.
Does the Ova Blanket have any evidence behind it?
Yes. The performance of EcoShield™ silver-fibre shielding fabric is verified by an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited electromagnetic compatibility laboratory, independently of Ova. The Faraday attenuation principle has been understood since 1836 and is applied in everything from MRI rooms to shielded cables.
What is not claimed is that using the blanket has been proven to improve health outcomes in a clinical trial. We make no health claims. We claim — and verify — that the blanket reduces RF exposure. Whether reduced RF exposure improves health outcomes is a separate question the science has not yet definitively answered.
The meter
How the Ova Meter works, what it connects to, and what it can tell you.
Doesn't the Meter itself emit radiation?
This is the most important question to ask — and we designed the Meter specifically to answer it correctly. The Ova Meter emits zero wireless radiation. It has no Bluetooth chip and no RF transmitter.
It connects to the Ova app through your existing Wi-Fi router. Your router transmits the data — the Meter is purely a receiver. This is a fundamental technical and ethical design choice we will never compromise on.
How do I set up the Meter?
1. Download the Ova app (iOS or Android — free) 2. Create your account and add your family members 3. Scan the QR code on your blanket's care label (or enter the serial number manually) to pair the blanket 4. In the app, tap "Add Meter" and enter your home Wi-Fi password when prompted 5. Plug the Meter into any wall socket — the green LED will pulse while connecting, then glow steady when live
Setup takes approximately 3 minutes. Full video instructions are available in the app and at ovaemf.com/setup.
Can the Meter tell me which device is causing high readings?
Not automatically — and we want to be honest about this. The Meter measures total field strength in the room and cannot attribute a reading to a specific device.
However, the app builds a picture over time. If you observe that readings spike at 7pm every evening, that correlates with typical screen time. If you turn your Wi-Fi router off and the reading drops significantly, you've identified your primary source. The app's pattern analysis is designed to help you draw these conclusions over days and weeks.
Tip: the simplest test is to turn devices off one at a time and watch the reading. Most families identify their biggest source within a week.
Can I add more than one Meter?
Yes. You can add up to 10 Meters to a single Ova account. Each one is assigned to a room, and all readings appear on a single dashboard in the app. Additional Meters are £80 each, or £210 for a 3-pack (saving £30). The app shows all rooms simultaneously so you can see your whole home at a glance.
The app
What the Ova app does, how it processes data, and what outdoor mapping covers.
Is the app really free?
Yes, completely free. No subscription, no premium tier, no in-app purchases. All features — live Meter readings, per-member exposure reports, outdoor 5G mapping, weekly insights — are included for every Ova customer.
We don't have a freemium model because we don't believe in withholding protection from families who've already bought the product. The app is part of the system.
How does outdoor 5G mapping work?
The app uses the OpenCelliD database — the world's largest open database of cell tower locations — to map 4G and 5G towers near your location. This processing happens entirely on your device. Your GPS coordinates are used locally to query the database and are never sent to Ova servers or stored anywhere.
The outdoor mapping provides an estimate of exposure from nearby towers based on tower type, band, and distance. It is not a live RF measurement outdoors — that would require the physical Meter. It is a planning and awareness tool.
What does the weekly report show?
Each weekly report is generated per family member and shows: daily exposure levels across the week compared to the previous week, hourly breakdown (morning, afternoon, evening, sleep), exposure by source type, blanket shield uptime and efficiency, comparison against WHO/ICNIRP and Building Biology thresholds, and three personalised insights with specific actionable recommendations.
Reports can be shared as a PDF — useful for sharing with a GP or health practitioner who wants to understand the data.
Privacy
Where your data lives and what Ova never does with it.
Does Ova store my family's data?
No. Family profiles, EMF readings, exposure reports and location data all live on your device only. Ova has no database of your family members' names, ages or health data. If you delete the app, all of that data is gone permanently — we have no copy to retrieve.
The only data on Ova servers is your email address (for account login and warranty) and your blanket's serial number (for warranty verification). Nothing else.
Will Ova ever sell my data?
No. This is an unconditional commitment in our Privacy Promise. We do not sell, share, license or transfer any user data to third parties — including analytics providers, health data brokers or advertisers. We do not accept advertising revenue. This commitment cannot be changed without 30 days' public notice and is archived publicly every time it is updated.

Care & warranty
How to wash it, store it, and what the guarantee covers.
How do I wash the blanket?
Machine wash at 30°C on a gentle or delicate cycle. Use a mild detergent without bleach, optical brighteners or fabric softener — these degrade the silver-fibre connections over time. Do not tumble dry. Lay flat or hang to air dry away from direct heat.
Shielding performance is certified to be maintained for a minimum of 50 washes at 30°C with correct care. The 2-year guarantee covers performance degradation within these parameters.
What does the 2-year guarantee cover?
The guarantee covers shielding performance for two years from the date of purchase, provided the blanket is cared for correctly (washed at 30°C or below, no bleach, no tumble drying). If the blanket fails to meet its stated attenuation performance within this period and care guidelines have been followed, we will replace it free of charge — no questions asked.
The guarantee does not cover physical damage from improper use, or performance degradation from washing above 30°C or tumble drying.
Does washing reduce the shielding effectiveness?
Very slightly, over many cycles — but far less than cheaper silver-fibre products. Independent lab testing shows the Ova Blanket retains above 99% attenuation after 10 washes, and above 20 dB (99%) after 50 washes at 30°C.
The key enemy of silver-fibre fabric is heat — hot water and tumble drying cause silver particles to separate from the fibres over time. At 30°C with gentle care, degradation is minimal and well within the 2-year guarantee threshold.
