What is EMF?

Electromagnetic fields (EMF) are areas of energy that surround electrical devices and wireless transmitters. They are invisible, ubiquitous, and have existed as long as the universe has. The sun, the earth's magnetic field, and every electrical device you own all produce them.

The important distinction is between non-ionising radiation — low-energy fields that cannot break chemical bonds in DNA — and ionising radiation such as X-rays and gamma rays, which can. The EMF produced by mobile phones, Wi-Fi and 5G is non-ionising. This matters enormously for understanding the science.

ELF Fields
Extremely low-frequency · non-ionising
ELF magnetic fields are produced wherever electricity flows. Unlike RF, ELF fields penetrate most materials easily, including walls and most shielding fabrics. They are classified as Group 2B "possibly carcinogenic" by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) — the same classification as coffee and pickled vegetables.

The Ova Blanket blocks EMF in the ELF–Microwave–5G range. It does not protect against UV, X-ray or ionising radiation — these require different shielding entirely.
02 · Safety thresholds

What the
authorities recommend.

The World Health Organisation (WHO), the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) and national regulators publish exposure limits based on the best available science. These are the numbers the Ova app benchmarks against, and the numbers every Ova product is independently tested against.

ICNIRP 2020
2,000
μW/m² · general public reference
RF exposure limit
The international reference level for continuous RF exposure to the general public across the frequency range 400 MHz to 2 GHz.
ICNIRP 2010
100
mG · general public reference
ELF exposure limit
The reference level for ELF magnetic field exposure (50 Hz) set for the general public by ICNIRP, adopted by WHO.
Building Biology
0.1
μW/m² · sleeping area recommendation
Precautionary sleep limit
The Building Biology Institute recommends this far lower threshold for sleeping areas — particularly for children — as a precautionary standard.
What this means in practice: The official ICNIRP limit of 2,000 μW/m² reflects the level at which thermal (heating) effects have been demonstrated. Many scientists and health practitioners apply a more precautionary standard — particularly for children, whose developing tissue absorbs proportionally more radiation. The Ova app displays both the ICNIRP reference level and the precautionary Building Biology threshold so you can make an informed decision.

EcoShield™ —
the science behind the fabric.

Silver has been used as an antimicrobial and conductive material for centuries. Its application in textile shielding is well-established in the scientific literature. EcoShield™ builds on this foundation with a manufacturing process optimised specifically for attenuation performance across the frequencies most relevant to modern life.

Silver conductivity
Silver has the highest electrical conductivity of any element (6.30 × 10⁷ S/m). When woven into fabric at sufficient density, it creates a conductive mesh that functions as a Faraday cage — redirecting electromagnetic waves rather than allowing them to pass through.
Faraday attenuation
Michael Faraday demonstrated in 1836 that a conductive enclosure redistributes electromagnetic charge on its surface, creating a near-zero field inside. EcoShield™ applies this principle to a flexible textile by ensuring the silver threads create a continuous conductive network with no gaps wider than the wavelengths being attenuated.
Frequency targeting
EcoShield™ is optimised for the 30 MHz–3 GHz range, which covers Wi-Fi (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz), 4G (700 MHz–2.6 GHz), 5G sub-6GHz (3.5 GHz) and Bluetooth (2.4 GHz). This covers the vast majority of sources a child or adult will encounter at home.
Performance after washing
The primary challenge with silver-fibre textiles is maintaining conductivity through washing cycles. EcoShield™ uses a bonding process that preserves silver-to-silver contact across 50+ gentle wash cycles at 30°C — verified by independent lab testing on each production batch.
04 · Independent verification

Tested. Certified.
Documented.

We do not ask you to take our word for anything on this page. Every performance claim made by Ova is supported by independent laboratory data from accredited testing facilities. The full test reports are available on request.

ISO/IEC 17025 accredited EMC testing
Shielding effectiveness measured in an accredited electromagnetic compatibility laboratory using standardised test methods. Attenuation reported across 30 MHz to 3 GHz in 0.5 dB increments. Minimum attenuation: 22 dB (99.4%) across all measured frequencies.
OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification
Every component of the Ova Blanket — outer fabric, silver-fibre layer, thread and label — is tested for over 100 harmful substances including heavy metals, pesticide residues, formaldehyde and pH value. Certified safe for babies and those with sensitive skin.
Wash durability testing
Attenuation performance measured before first wash and again after 10, 25 and 50 wash cycles at 30°C gentle programme. Performance must remain above 20 dB (99%) at all tested frequencies after 50 washes to pass certification. Each production batch tested independently.
GOTS organic cotton verification
The outer cotton layer is Global Organic Textile Standard certified — traceable from raw fibre to finished fabric. This means no synthetic pesticides, no prohibited chemical inputs, and fair working conditions at every stage of the supply chain.
05 · Honesty

What Ova does.
What it doesn't.

This is the section most companies leave out. We believe the most trustworthy thing we can do is tell you exactly what our products cannot do, as clearly as we describe what they can.

The blanket does
Block RF radiation effectively
EcoShield™ attenuates RF fields across 30 MHz–3 GHz by 22–35 dB (99–99.9%) in lab conditions. This is independently verified, batch-tested, and wash-durable. The physics is sound and the evidence is strong.
The blanket doesn't
Block ELF magnetic fields
ELF fields penetrate most materials including silver-fibre fabrics. The Ova Blanket does not meaningfully attenuate ELF. This is why the Ova Meter — which detects ELF — is a critical companion: it helps you identify and remove ELF sources rather than trying to block them.
The meter does
Detect and trend EMF exposure accurately
The Ova Meter provides reliable RF and ELF readings at room level, updated every 15 minutes. Readings are calibrated against certified reference instruments. The data is genuinely useful for identifying problem sources and measuring improvements.
The meter doesn't
Identify individual devices
The Meter measures total field strength in the room. It cannot attribute a reading to a specific device. Correlating a spike to "the laptop" requires you to observe patterns over time, or test by turning devices off one at a time. The app helps you build this picture gradually.
The science does say
Precaution is reasonable for children
Multiple health authorities including the UK Health Security Agency, the WHO and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend precautionary limits for children's RF exposure. The evidence does not prove harm at current exposure levels — but it supports reasonable precaution, which is what Ova provides.
The science doesn't say
Current levels cause proven harm
To be clear: there is no scientific consensus that everyday EMF exposure at current levels causes demonstrable harm in healthy adults or children. The evidence suggests caution, particularly for developing tissue — but we will not overstate this. Ova is precautionary protection, not a response to a proven crisis.
